Recovering from wp-login.php attack

Recently I was not able to login to my wordpress account. If I visit my wp-login.php page, I was getting a 403 error. Initially I thought it was problem with my wordpress installation but it was not. The error was because of a brute force attack on the wordpress login pages. My server was blocking access to this page. Lot of people are facing this problem. So I thought of blogging. There are plugins to block this attack. But they can only be installed and activated once you are able to login.

Below is the solution for the wp-login.php issue which I found from internet. My initial target was to login. The quickest solution was to rename wp-login.php to a new file name and also replace with the new file name in the renamed wp-login.php file. In the following link, you will get the details how to do This is not a recommended method but a quick solution to get a login.

Once you login, you can search for wordpress security plugins. Some restricts the number of login, some hides the login page. Search and install which one you found better. I am using Better WP Security. Once you enable your security plugin, I would suggest to revert back to file name wp-login.php and also replace inside the php file.

Happy blogging!

Adding links to the header in WP K2 theme

While using wordpress for blogging, you may have to add externel links. For example if you need a link to your flickr page, you cannot add it from the wordpress menu. I think adding external links in K2 theme of wordpress is a little bit different.

In some of the forums they will ask you to edit header.php in themes/k2/ . Or some may ask you to add an plugin. But I don’t love adding plugins too much. And I think adding external links in K2 theme of wordpress is not very hard.

  1. Just edit the file themes/k2/app/includes/display.php
  2. Find <ul class=”menu”>
  3. Just below that add the line <li><ahref=””>EXAMPLE</a></li>
  4. Save it and referesh your page.

Do you see the new link as the first ? Just try to add the same line in other places and have your links placed as you wish….

Cool Avatars on my blog

An avatar is a computer user’s representation of himself/herself or alter ego, whether in the form of a three-dimensional model used in computer games, a two-dimensional icon (picture) used on Internet forums and other communities, or a text construct found on early systems such as MUDs. It is an “object” representing the embodiment of the user. The term “avatar” can also refer to the personality connected with the screen name, or handle, of an Internet user. — Wikipedia

I was in search of some cool avatars. It was at that time I came with Splitbrain‘s Monster ID. Using his package you can create cool moster avatars…

From his page I got the wordpress plugin for Monster ID maintained by Scott. You can download the plugin from his page and have cool avatars come up when some one comments your blog. Now cool monster’s come on my comments my blog. The monsters now created are based on email address. Even monsters can be created using ip address etc….

The avatars wont come as soon as you comment. You will have to just refresh the page.

This was the avatar that I got from the comments posted by me
